Therapy and Counseling for Individuals
About Therapy: Questions you may have . . .
How often do we meet? Sessions generally occur once a week, but can be more or less frequent depending on your situation and goals. Dedicating time to regularly stop and focus on yourself – something that few of us ever allow ourselves to do – contributes to therapies effectiveness.
How long are sessions? Sessions are forty-five minutes in length.
How long will therapy last? The course of therapy can be brief or long-term, depending on your goals.
What will therapy be like? Therapy, like most relationships, has three phases: a beginning, middle, and end. The initial phase is a time of relationship building. I will ask lots of questions not only to get to know you, but to help you become familiar with me and how I work. Trust takes time to develop, but once earned the process naturally moves into the middle phase. It is during this period that the majority of the work is accomplished. Feeling comfortable and supported allows for realistic assessment of your life story and current situation, and brings you to a greater understanding of yourself. With this new knowledge, tools and strategies can be developed to move you forward in the direction you want. Evaluation of your progress and goals will be continuous, and the final phase – the ending of therapy – is approached through mutual discussion. Just as important as the previous phases, it is a time to reflect on the process itself, how and why it worked, and how to promote continued success.
What will my progress be like? Humans are complex and multi-dimensional, and so too is the process that heals us. There will probably be ups and downs on your journey . . . times of frustration or slow progress – other times filled with inspiring new insights and important gains - and believe it or not, instances of fun and laughter. Ultimately, when staying with it, there is that satisfying realization that change has happened!
